Some birds you might see along the shore in the U.S. are seagulls, piping plovers, terns, American oystercatchers, sandpipers, and ruddy turnstones, among others.

You can roast marshmallows for s’mores and enjoy the warmth of the fire as you watch the sun dip below the horizon and feel a chill enter the air. It’s the perfect way to end the day on a relaxing note.

Use your fingers, a stick, or seashells to draw words in the sand, leaving behind messages for others to discover along the beach.

Create a cozy hideaway for the kids behind your beach chairs by building a makeshift tent with towels or beach blankets. Drape towels or blankets over the top to create a shady retreat from the sun. Add some folded towels to use as pillows, and toys or a book, and relax as the kids enjoy their own beachside fort. This is also a great spot for kids who prefer quiet activities or who may be overtired and need a nap.

Get hands-on with the kids and create drip sand castles using wet sand at the beach. Simply scoop up handfuls of wet sand and let it slowly drip from your fingers, which you can use to create whimsical castle shapes. With a little practice and creativity, you can build impressive towers and winding walls for your castle.

47. Skip rocks, or have a rock skipping contest

Find smooth, flat stones along the shoreline, perfect for achieving maximum skips, and take turns testing your skills. Challenge your friends or family to a rock-skipping contest on the beach, seeing who can make their rocks skip the farthest distance or the highest number of skips across the water’s surface.

48. Participate in a beach clean up

Join an organized beach clean-up session or head out on your own to help keep the shoreline clean and litter-free. Arm yourself with gloves and trash bags, and scour the sand for any debris or litter that has washed ashore, such as plastic bottles, discarded wrappers, or stray beach toys. 50. Build a sand wall against incoming waves

Challenge yourself and the kids to build a sand wall (approximately less than a foot high x 2–3 feet wide) as high tide approaches, and see how long you can keep it standing against the incoming waves. Use your hands or buckets to pile up sand, creating a sturdy barrier along the shoreline. Work together to reinforce the wall and fortify its defenses, but beware—the relentless waves will eventually overcome even the best construction skills and determination. It’s a thrilling race against the tide that promises plenty of fun and excitement.

Try metal detecting for a chance to discover hidden treasures in the sand. Make sure to follow local regulations and check if you need a permit before you start exploring.

Enjoying the beach with your dog is an awesome experience, just make sure to check if the beach is dog-friendly first. If it is, you can play fetch or frisbee, let them run in the sand, and even let them take a dip in the water for a fun time for all.

Cool off by taking a swim in the beach’s refreshing waters (make sure lifeguards are present).

Grab a board at a local shop and ride waves back to the shore for some exhilarating fun. Boogie boarding has a much smaller learning curve than surfing, and is a perfect activity for all ages to enjoy the ocean waves.

Experience the thrill of body surfing, which means using your body to catch and ride the ocean’s waves back to shore.

Many coastal spots offer windsurfing rentals and lessons, making it easy for beginners to get started and for seasoned enthusiasts to hit the water. With a little guidance and some practice, you’ll be catching the wind and riding the waves in no time.

61. Challenge yourself with skimboarding

Glide across the water’s surface on a skimboard, riding the waves as they break along the beach. Skimboarding can be tricky to learn, but once you get the hang of it, it’s a blast.

62. Go stand-up paddleboarding

Give stand-up paddleboarding a try, balancing on a board while paddling through the calm waters for a fun and relaxing workout and a great view of the shoreline. You can rent paddleboards at many beach locations if you don’t have your own.

Parents of younger children can help them jump high enough by lifting them up to “jump” as the waves approach. Wave jumping was one of my favorite beach activities as a kid.

Beach paddleball is a classic beach activity where you hit the ball back and forth without letting it hit the ground. See how many times you can hit it back and forth and try to beat your own record!

74. Play frisbee

Playing frisbee at the beach is fun because the open space allows for long throws and spectacular catches, diving into the sand or water.

75. Play a game of wiffleball

Beach wiffleball is a game that’s suitable for all ages. It’s easy to pick up and play, thanks to the wide bat that makes hitting the ball relatively easy, ensuring everyone can join in on the fun.

76. Go jogging or running along the shore

Why run on the treadmill when you can run on the beach? It’s a fantastic way to get your heart pumping while soaking up the beauty of the beach.

It’s an ideal activity to engage those who prefer a more relaxed alternative to active sports. You’ll want to play on flat, firm wet sand, usually around low tide, in order to get the balls to roll.

In addition to simply tossing a frisbee around, why not spice things up with a frisbee game like Kan Jam, or create your own custom game? For example, you can set up an object, such as a toy or water bottle, on your cooler and take turns trying to knock it off with the frisbee. Alternatively, you can make sand castles that you need to knock over. Play to the best of 5, 15, or any number you prefer, depending on the number of players. Just be sure to choose a spot away from other beachgoers to avoid accidentally sending the frisbee into their space. If you don’t have a frisbee, you can play this game with a ball.

Enjoy a game of beach badminton, a fun and active way to spend time on the sand with friends or family. You can set up your own net or take advantage of beaches that already have nets available.

Roundnet is played with two teams of two. One player hits the ball down onto the net to the other team, and the receiving team is allowed three touches to bump, set, and spike the ball back onto the net, similar to volleyball.
