How to Create a Modern Coastal Laundry Room You’ll Actually Enjoy

A 3D mockup of a coastal laundry room, with white beadboard on the lower half of the wall, wallpaper on the upper half of the wall, a floating wood shelf above a washer and dryer with a plant and a woven basket on it, and a woven laundry hamper in front of a window.

Image note: I created this 3D mockup from my collage to help visualize the design.

I’ve been thinking about giving my laundry room a little makeover. It’s not a large space, so that makes it the perfect place to experiment with design ideas and add a little personality. The laundry room is such a good spot to have fun with wallpaper or paint since you don’t spend hours there but still see it often. I want mine to feel bright, coastal, and fun, with a few natural textures to warm it up.

To start brainstorming, I created two modern coastal laundry room mockups. One has wallpaper covering the entire wall, and the other pairs the same wallpaper with white beadboard on the lower half. Both versions include a navy roman shade, rattan accents, and white and rattan cabinetry that keeps the look fresh and modern.

If you’d like to see the individual pieces up close, I’ve also made a decor collage that highlights the coastal laundry room decor I used, including the wallpaper, rattan hamper, plant, rug, basket, and shade. Below that, you can see a closeup of the wall cabinets and wall paneling.

Idea 1: Full Wallpaper

This version has wallpaper covering the entire wall for a bold, all-over coastal look. It feels more playful and makes the pattern the main feature of the room. The rattan hamper and basket keep it grounded and add warmth.

Idea 2: Beadboard Detail

This version combines the same wallpaper with white beadboard on the lower half of the wall. It tones down the pattern a bit and adds a traditional coastal element that still feels modern. The beadboard also adds texture and dimension without competing with the wallpaper.

For this laundry room design, I focused on pieces that feel modern but still have classic coastal style. The rattan hamper and woven basket add texture and warmth, the wallpaper brings an element of fun and pattern, the faux plant brings a pop of green and an element of nature, and the navy shade creates a clean contrast against the wallpaper (the color itself is pulled from a small accent in the pattern for a coordinated look). These small choices make a big difference when you’re trying to capture a modern coastal style without overwhelming the space.

If you’re looking for modern coastal laundry room ideas, here are a few simple ways to bring the look into your space:

  • Start with color. Shades of white, navy, and sandy beige instantly create a coastal base. Add interest with wallpaper or patterned tile that brings movement and texture.
  • Incorporate natural materials. Rattan, seagrass, water hyacinth, and wood accents help balance the clean lines of appliances and cabinetry.
  • Keep it functional. A shelf for laundry essentials, a sturdy basket, and built-in storage make it both stylish and practical.
  • Add a small touch of life. A plant (or faux plant!) on a shelf or near a window keeps the space feeling fresh and inviting.

Even a few of these details can completely change the mood of the room, turning laundry from a chore into something that feels a bit more enjoyable.

Designing a coastal laundry room is a great way to bring style and personality into an everyday space. Even small updates like new wallpaper, a textured hamper, or a soft coastal color palette can make the room feel lighter and more enjoyable. I love the idea of turning a practical area into something that still reflects the relaxed, modern coastal aesthetic I want throughout my home.
