There’s nothing more relaxing than spending a day at the beach by yourself. Of course it’s fun to have company, but the beach is also one of the best places to spend time alone.

Between the beautiful views, the smell of the sweet, salty air, the sound of the waves, and feeling the ocean breeze in your hair, it’s hard to think of a more enjoyable place to be.

If you’re wondering what someone can do when they go to the beach alone, there are plenty of ways to spend time at the beach by yourself.

A solo beach day is a great way to enjoy time outdoors, feel connected with nature, and to take a break from electronics (if that’s something you’re interested in doing). In our daily lives it can be easy to forget to step outside and get fresh air, or to appreciate the beauty of the world around us. The beach offers us all of these opportunities.

The beach also has a magical way of bringing you inner peace and offers a perfect backdrop to sort out your thoughts. If you’ve been busy, stressed, or have something on your mind, a day at the beach or even a walk on the beach can work wonders. As Isak Dinesen wrote, “the cure for anything is salt water — sweat, tears, or the sea.”

If you’re someone who can find yourself feeling self-conscious while doing things in public alone, there’s no reason to feel that way at the beach. There is nothing weird about going to the beach by yourself. It’s totally common for people to go to the beach solo, and you’ll likely run into numerous other solo beachgoers as well. In fact, many people prefer going to the beach alone, because you get to choose what you do, where you go, and how long you stay.

Below you’ll find a list of the best things you can do at the beach alone. This list has ideas for a variety of interests and activity levels.

The 17 Best Things to Do at the Beach By Yourself

1. Relax and enjoy the view

Most importantly, you don’t need to “do” anything to enjoy your day at the beach. Just sitting in your beach chair and taking in the view is relaxing and enjoyable!

2. Read a book or magazine

Grab that book that’s been sitting on your bookshelf for way too long or pick up a magazine on your way to the beach and dive in. Reading on the beach is great because there are minimal distractions. We believe that beach reading is the best kind of reading!

3. Take a walk

Getting a little exercise is even more enjoyable with the sights and sounds of the beach. Walk at a leisurely pace and take in the views, or power walk or jog if you’re looking for more of a challenge.

4. Look for interesting shells or rocks

There are so many sea treasures to be found at the beach if you look for them. Even if you don’t intend to keep any, you can still see how many different types of shells you can find, or look for interesting rocks that have been smoothed and rounded from many years of being tossed in the ocean’s waves.

5. People watching

There are a lot of activities happening at the beach, so it can be fun to sit back in your chair and watch all that’s going on around you — whether that involves people throwing a frisbee back and forth, someone building a sandcastle, or just watching all of the people waking by.

6. Do a crossword puzzle or word search

The beach is a great place to leisurely play a word game or word puzzle.

7. Go for a swim

It can get hot sitting on the beach, even if you’re under your umbrella, so taking a dip is a great way to cool off. If you’re not comfortable going all the way in, you can still cool off by standing with your feet in the water. Sometimes the air feels noticeably cooler just by standing at the water’s edge!

8. Bird watching

Depending on what part of the country you’re in, you’d be surprised at how many different species of birds can be found at the beach. A great (free!) phone app to use for identifying birds is Audubon Bird Guide. It helps you to identify birds using features you observed, such as color, size, and tail shape. You can also choose to add your own photos of the birds you identify if you want to keep track of them.

9. Needlepoint or knit

If you have a project you’ve wanted to work on but have trouble finding the time for, bring it with you on your solo beach day and spend some time on it without the usual distractions of daily life.

10. Listen to a podcast or audiobook

The sound of the ocean is one of the best parts about going to the beach, but you can also have an enjoyable time listening to a podcast or audiobook, and there will be plenty of beach sights to take in while you do so. It’s considerate to use headphones so you don’t disturb nearby beachgoers who want to enjoy the sounds of the beach.

11. Write in a journal

There’s no better place to clear your mind and sort out your thoughts than sitting on the beach watching the surf. There’s just something about the backdrop and the sights and sounds of the ocean that helps to put things into perspective. Writing in a journal or notebook is a great way to capture these thoughts so you can refer back to them later.

12. Draw or paint what you see

You don’t have to be a great artist to try your hand at sketching or painting at the beach. Grab some colored pencils, oil pastels, or watercolor paints, and have fun with it. If creating original art doesn’t interest you, try a coloring book made for adults, which many people find relaxing and meditative.

13. Experiment with photography

Try to capture your beach day from all angles. You can take a photo of the ocean from both far away and up close, you can capture a sea gull on land or flying overhead, as well as shells in the sand, a wave crashing on shore, a kite in the sky, and anything else that catches your eye.

14. Eat lunch or enjoy an ice cream cone

Bring your own lunch or grab something at the beach snack bar (if your beach has one) and eat it on the beach while enjoying the view. Having a meal at the beach can be a good way to squeeze in a visit to the beach if you don’t have a lot of spare time.

15. Go boogie boarding

If you’re feeling a little more adventurous, bring a boogie board and catch some waves. You can also use the board as a kick board for taking a swim.

16. Explore the tide pools at low tide

See what interesting beach creatures you can find in the tide pools, like crabs, periwinkles, and star fish. It’s fun to look while respecting them and their habitat.

17. Check out the beach shops

A lot of beach areas have nearby gift shops, which can vary from high-end, gift-worthy beach shops, to tacky souvenir shops (we enjoy both kinds!). It’s fun walking through and taking a look at their offerings, and you might even find something you want to take home to remember your solo beach day.
