One of the things I love about an eat-in kitchen is having a comfortable place for breakfast, coffee, and small projects without needing to use the formal dining room.

This little kitchen eating area is still in its early stages. It’s a simple setup right now, with a table, chairs, and a vase of flowers that I can change out seasonally. It gets beautiful morning light, and it’s where I like to sit for breakfast and sometimes work from home during the day.

I’ve been thinking through how I want to build on this space over time so it feels more finished and connected to the rest of the house. For now, I’m living with it as it is while slowly shaping the direction it will take and looking for the perfect pieces to add.

This is what the kitchen nook looked like when we moved in.

An empty room with a window.

This is the current stage of the kitchen nook, with a table, chairs, and a vase of flowers. Furnishing and decorating this room is a work-in-progress. I don’t like to rush designing a room, and prefer to live in the space for a while first so I can understand how it’s actually used, what it needs, and how I want it to feel.

Here’s the direction I’m planning for this kitchen nook as I think through how I want the space to feel and function.

A kitchen dining area with a round white table, navy blue dining chairs, and a vase with flowers. Over it design plans have been drawn for placing art, crown moulding, window trim, a rug, bamboo shade, and storage or console table.

Over the next year or so, I’m planning to add crown moulding, trim around the window, and either a bamboo shade or plantation shutters. I’d also like to bring in a rug under the table and chairs, some artwork for the walls, and a storage piece like a console or cabinet for extra display space:

A graphic titled Coastal Kitchen Nook featuring window treatment ideas: a bamboo shade and plantation shutters; two storage cabinet ideas with light wood and glass doors, and two natural fiber round rug ideas: one with a navy border and one with cutouts.

For now, I’m enjoying this blue and white coastal kitchen dining space as it is and letting it evolve slowly over time. It doesn’t need to be fully finished to be a useful part of the home, and I’m looking forward to building on it piece by piece as I figure out what works best here. I like that it can grow gradually as our needs and ideas change.
